Reading/Discussion #2

Explain some of the benefits of youth filmmaking for learning in and out of school.

Youth film-making is an exceptional way for students to get their thoughts, insights and opinions out. It is more difficult to do public presentations, but with film-making students have the opportunity to record themselves and their friends privately where they feel safer and can re-record as needed.  Students can research, interview and travel a variety of different avenues in getting their messages across to their viewers.

Film can bring kids that would otherwise go without a voice to the forefront of a debate or topic relevant for expansion.  These kids can shine more brightly with the applications of programs, creativity and their abilities to come up with interesting and inventive ways of translating their ideas to video.

Film offers students a bit more time for construction, when they can write, proof and rework scripts as needed, or show the rawness of a topic if that is their desired approach.

The reel works videos display creativity, inventiveness and definitely a rawness to their viewers.  This teens are obviously untrained, but many good qualities come forward out of their inexperience and many things are more true and genuine because of their simplicity.

I think these videos give educators great ideas for ways they can bring students out of the shadows.  Thanks for referring us to this site.  I have already showed a few of the videos in my classroom this past week.  Interesting stuff!
