What did you learn from the video? I learned that "gamers" as they often call themselves are not necessarily hidden away and unsocial. These kids often create communities of support from teens and others who enjoy the alternate reality that video games and virtual worlds provide for them online. They interact with each other and are social, just in a virtual way through these created game realities.
How do you think the video support a healthy respect for multiculturalism? I think the video supports diversity of temperament. These kids in the real world are often shy and withdrawn, but in their virtual atmospheres where they have some wall of protection, they can let out some of who they are and be themselves in ways our natural world doesn't allow as easily. The virtual world brings them out of their shells and in many ways this is a positive step.
2. Marlisa Lake liked "A Girl like Me"
What did you learn from the video? This video introduces us to several young black teenagers who voice their opinions about their society and identities. These girls have issues and insecurities about their race because of a lack of connection to their root heritage and a lack of passed down ancestry knowledge. They are at a disconnect and are struggling with accepting themselves and their society.
How do you think the video support a healthy respect for multiculturalism? I think the video helps introduce other cultural insecurities and assists us in relating to their identity struggles and personal image interpretations. Everyone can relate in some way to these girls - empathy and awareness brings us together and helps in overcoming stereotypes and prejudices. I think it was an interesting spin on what we traditionally see as identity struggles, these girls bring forward new perspectives for us to be aware of.
3. Jessica Harmening liked "Forever Young"
What did you learn from the video? This video reminds us of the power of childhood innocence. We lose much of this when we mature and have more and more responsibility. This girl is fighting to hold onto hers and is explaining how much it means to her.
How do you think the video support a healthy respect for multiculturalism? The video brings to mind qualities we have as children and reminds us we can still practice many of these qualities if we remind ourselves to. The youthful free spirited hope of the future, fulfilling our dreams and living for the moment at times. This video reminds us of our humanity and the frailties of life on earth. This video connects us back to aspects of our lives that were more stress free. I think everyone can benefit from being reminded of our past and how we can maintain this youthful innocence in the future.
